Easter Camp ‘08

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

As the sun ticked past noon on a blustery day in March, a small band of intrepid adventurers descended upon the small camp of Bisley in leafy Surrey…

Due to a slight organisational hiccup, we can’t quite remember which of those intrepid adventurers actually arrived on the Friday, but suffice it to say it was the hardened, or rather, naïve few. We set up base camp in the Inns of Court clubhouse, with the satellite base in the adopted home of London University “Casa del Dash – The Finest Caravan money didn’t buy”. (more…)

Imperial Meeting 2007

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

A message from the outgoing Full-bore Captain.

I just want to congratulate everyone on what I think has been a pretty successful meeting for the club. We won the inter-universities short range (the Musketeers) by a whole 2 v-bulls in what was a ridiculously close match (the top three teams were level on points). We didn’t retain the long range but came a very close second (and higher on v-bulls!). I’m told that most of the Cambridge lot who beat us were doing the match rifle meeting beforehand, so considering the practice they had, I reckon we gave them a pretty good run for their money!

With no less than 11 members shooting either the whole or part of the meeting (and Jess and Laura shooting their first full meeting), there are a number of individual highlights to mention: (more…)

Bull’s Eye for Rifle Club

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

By Jessica McArdle

The transition from indoor to outdoor shooting is like having the stabilizers taken off your bicycle and climbing onto a motorbike. Summertime for rifle shooters is all about full-bore, outdoor shooting so after six months of indoor 25 yard shooting at our Moorgate range the time came to get wrapped around a bigger piece of metal with a more impressive kick. To knock us into shape the Rifle club committee organised an Easter training camp at Bisley. No matter how laissez faire you claim to be, the decision to go camping with a crowd of rifle shooters in the cold of late March is not an easy one to make. As the alternative was a week in the library, I decided to take my chances.

Autumn Term Summary

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

Our regular readers (!) will have noticed a lack of updates to this site of late, for which please accept our apologies. However, I can safely say that this was due to a shortage of time rather than a shortage of events upon which to report. Indeed the University of London Rifle Club have had a successful autumn term with membership numbers in the 60s, and a regular turnout in excess of 30 people at training sessions. (more…)

The 137th Annual Imperial Meeting (Sat 10 Jul to Sat 24 Jul)

Monday, July 31st, 2006

The 2006 Imperial Meeting saw another strong performance from the University of London Rifle Club. Although we weren’t able to set any new records (as we had last year), the University of London ‘A’ team secured confident wins in both “The Musketeers” and the “Universities Long Range” team competitions, as well as the “Universities Aggregate” (shot concurrently with the Grand Aggregate). A Recent History of The University of London Rifle Club

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

By Mark Westmoquette.

The University of London Rifle Club (ULRC) enjoys a distinguished history with many notable achievements since its founding in 1911. However the conditions that allow a university club to continue achieving are difficult to maintain. The average university degree length is only three or four years, meaning that the turnover in membership is rapid. The ability to maintain continuity in such circumstances is very restricted. However a good history, a dependable president (Peter Cullimore), a fairly aggressive recruitment ethos, and a pool of 125,000 students to choose from, has meant that ULRC has prospered. Since I joined in 1999 (yes, I know, for those who can do the maths, that means I’ve been at university seven years), ULRC has had their name on at least one trophy per year! (more…)

ULRC vs Army Target Rifle Club

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

This was our first fulbore match of the season, and considering we had a few hitches we did pretty well. We had less people than hoped, which meant that we had too many targets, but that wasn’t a problem in the afternoon as the army hadn’t booked enough for Lloyds TSB RC at long range. (more…)
